Development of Nationwide Vs30 Map and Calibrated Conversion Table for Indonesia using Automated Topographical Classification

    Get PDF
A nationwide Vs30 map for Indonesia was developed based on automated topographic classification from 90-m grid digital elevation data and their correlation with Vs30. Automated topographic classification has been proposed by Iwahashi and Pike (2007) and a procedure to convert topographic class into Vs30 maps has been developed by Imamura and Furuta (2015) based on Vs data from J-SHIS (Japan Seismic Hazard Information System). In order to be suitable for Indonesia, calibration work according to Imamura and Furuta's procedure should be conducted since the geotechnical conditions in Japan may not be the same as in Indonesia. This paper presents adjustment of the Vs30 correlation by Imamura and Furuta to convert topographic class into Vs30 and construct a Vs30 map of Indonesia. This correlation was calibrated by using Vs data from BMKG (Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysics) as well as standard penetration test logs that were collected by the authors. Utilization of local field measurement data will certainly enhance the reliability of the Vs30 map. The developed nationwide Vs30 map will be very useful for disaster mitigation programs and for preliminary design of earthquake resistant buildings and infrastructure in Indonesia

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed enormous demands on leaders in the public sector. Regional politicians have two interests: conveying information related to handling the pandemic and convincing the public that they are competent in handling the crisis. Through impression management on social media, regional leaders seek to achieve these two goals. This study aimed to find out what impression management tactics were used by regional heads in Indonesia during the pandemic through social media. This study used the Leader Impression Management Framework to analyze the contents of posts on the official Instagram accounts of four governors in Indonesia, namely West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, during the early period of the pandemic. The results showed that the four governors used impression management tactics in varied ways, but there were similarities in the main tactics used to manage their impressions. The findings raised theoretical and practical implications about the leaders’ methods of communication to the public during the pandemic. Get PDF
In the present study, we have isolated rhizospheric bacteria JW1 from rice paddy in Andong, South Korea. The culture filtrate (CF) analysis of JW1 showed higher contents of gibberellins GA1, GA4, GA7, organic acids, fatty acids and tricalcium phosphates. The 16S rDNA gene sequencing and phylogentic analysis revealed that thestrain JW1 has a 99% homology with Bacillus subtilis sequences from BLAST search. The growth promotion capability of the strain JW1 was initially assessed on Waito-C and Whayoung-beyo rice cultivars, which improved the growth attributes of the rice cultivars. Similarly, a significant increase in plant height, biomass, chlorophyll contents and nutrient uptake have been noticed, when the Chinese cabbage was treated with JW1 strain. From the results, it is concluded that the integrative use of B. subtilis JW1 can promote plant growthby secreting bioactive compounds. Therefore, B. subtilis JW1 may be utilized as an eco-friendly bio-fertilizer in the agricultural fields after successful field trials

    Get PDF
Soybean seeds have high amount of isoflavones but its germination is often confronted with a variety of environmental problems resulting in low germination rate and growth. To overcome this in eco-friendly manner, we investigated the influence of cultural filtrate (CF) of gibberellins-producing endophytic fungi on soybean seed germination. Three endophytic fungi namely: Chrysosporium pseudomerdarium, Aspergillus fumigatus and Paecilomyces sp. were previously isolated from the roots of soybean plants. The culture filtrate application of the three endophyte resulted in significantly higher rate of soybean seed germination, germination percentage, relative seed germination percentage, peak value, germination value, shoot and root length, germination index and vigour index. Among the endophytes, A. fumigatus significantly increased the rate of germination, shoot and root length and vigour index. Same trend was noted in germination percentage and relative seed germination percentage for all the endophytic fungi. However, C. pseudomerdarium was the only one that enhanced germination index. The enhanced soybean seed germination by endophytes can be used for seed priming and hence improved crop plant growth under extreme environmental conditions.Key words: Chrysosporium pseudomerdarium, Aspergillus fumigatus, Paecilomyces sp., soybean, seed germination

Contribution of Synoptic Transients to the Potential Predictability of PNA Circulation Anomalies: El Niño versus La Niña

    Get PDF
Abstract The potential predictability (PP) of seasonal-mean 200-hPa geopotential height (Z200) anomalies in the Pacific–North American (PNA) region is examined for El Niño and La Niña separately by using 50 ensemble members of twentieth-century AGCM simulations. Observed sea surface temperature (SST) is prescribed for the period 1870–2009, and 14 El Niño and La Niña years after 1900 are selected for the present study. The domain-averaged value of PP for Z200 in the PNA region, as measured by the signal-to-noise ratio, for El Niño is about 60% larger than that of La Niña. Such a large PP is mainly due to a larger signal and partly to less noise during El Niño compared to that during La Niña . The transient eddy feedback to the PNA circulation anomalies is stronger during El Niño events (about 50%) than that during La Niña, and this difference in the transients contributes significantly to the different Z200 signals in the PNA region. The noise variance of the transients during El Niño is about 17% smaller than during La Niña, and thus transients play an important role in the reduction of Z200 noise during El Niño. Idealized experiments with the same spatial pattern but different signs of SST anomalies confirm the results mentioned above. Moreover, these experiments with several different amplitudes of positive and negative phases of tropical Pacific SST anomalies show that signals of Z200 and transients are proportional to precipitation anomalies in the tropical Pacific, and noises of Z200 for El Niño cases are somewhat smaller than the corresponding values of La Niña

Tungsten-based ultrathin absorber for visible regime

    Get PDF
Utilizing solar energy requires perfect absorption of light by the photovoltaic cells, particularly solar thermophotovoltaics (STPVs), which can be eventually converted into useful electrical energy. Ultrathin nanostructures, named metasurfaces, provide an intriguing platform to develop the miniaturized solar energy absorbers that can find potential applications in integrated photonics, optical sensing, color imaging, thermal imaging and electromagnetic shielding. Therefore, the quest of novel materials and designs to develop highly efficient absorbers at minuscule scale is an open topic. In this paper, novel absorbers using tungsten-metasurface are developed which give ultrahigh absorbance over a wide frequency spectrum. The proposed designs are two-dimensional, polarization insensitive, broadband and are predicted to give better response under high temperatures ascribed to high melting point of tungsten i.e. 3422 degrees C. Amongst these designs, cross alignment is found optimum for tungsten, because it is impedance matched with the free space for visible spectrum. This cross arrangement is further tweaked by changing width, height and length resulting in 7 different optimized solutions giving an average absorbance greater than 98%. One, amongst these solutions, gave a maximum average absorbance of 99.3%.114Nsciescopu
